In the past few years, millions of tires manufactured by various companies have been recalled due to hazardous defects. A dangerous, yet common, tire defect is tread separation and takes place when the tread separates from the tire as the result of a defect in design or manufacturing. Heavy wear and inadequate inflation may cause the tread on a defective tire to separate, but it is possible for new and properly inflated tires to experience tread separation. Tire tread separation may take place at any speed, even as low as 15 or 20 miles per hour.

In certain instances, tread separation may lead to a tire blowout and may cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
